How Does the Subscription Work?
You do need a subscription to order from ButcherBox. Fortunately, the subscription plans are easy to understand and easy to get started with.
First, you pick your box and box size. After that, you choose how often they'll ship your meats to your house.
The default shipment frequency is 4 weeks (once per month). However, they offer four (4) different shipment frequencies to choose from:
- 2 Weeks;
- 4 Weeks;
- 6 Weeks; or
- 8 Weeks.
If you want your boxes to arrive more or less frequently, you can change it from 4-weeks during sign-up.
If you're already subscribed, you can change your box frequency in your ButcherBox account settings. We have our box shipped to us every 4 weeks and it works well for our meal schedule.

We like how ButcherBox makes it easy to make changes to the subscription plans. You can make the following changes right from the account portal:
- Your bill date;
- Box shipment frequency;

- Shipping or billing info.
You can also easily pause or cancel your subscription without any hidden fees or penalties. They don't pressure you at all to keep your subscription if you're not happy.

About the Meat
One of the most important considerations we make when choosing the kinds of food we put in our bodies is where it comes from. In our opinion, the top-selling points for ButcherBox are the fact that all of their meat comes from carefully vetted locations, is fed natural diets, and is raised humanely.
The Beef
The beef is 100% grass-fed and grass finished. The majority of it comes from Australia where the climate is ideal and the animals spend their entire lives grazing on pastureland.
All beef regardless of where it's sourced from is pasture-raised, humanely raised, 100% grass-fed and finished, and never given antibiotics or added hormones.
Cuts include: ribeye, flat iron, bottom round roast, coulotte, steak tips, filet mignon, and ground.
The Chicken
The chicken is free-range organic and is Global Animal Partnership (GAP 3) certified. This means that the chickens are not raised in cages, crates, or in overcrowded environments. They have seasonal access to the outdoors and get plenty of fresh air. All of these living enhancements greatly increase the quality of life for these chickens.
Also, the chickens are never given antibiotics or added hormones!
Cuts include drumstick, tenders, breast, thighs (boneless and bone-in), and whole chicken.
The Pork
Many of their pork products have lineage to heritage-breeds like Berkshire, Duroc, and Chester White. Heritage breed basically means that the hogs have a distinguished, natural ancestry. They mature slower and their meat develops a delicious marbling and flavor.
All hogs are raised crate-free and are fed an all-vegetarian diet. Plus, they're never given antibiotics or added hormones.
Cuts include bacon, butt, pork chops, ribs, tenderloin, and ground.
The Seafood
ButcherBox offers a variety of different wild-caught seafood like Salmon, Scallops, Lobster, Cod and Halibut. Some of it is seasonal however and based on availability.
- The Sockeye Salmon is wild-caught in Alaska.
- Scallops are caught in Georges Bank (the Atlantic Ocean off the Massachusetts coast) and landed in New Bedford, MA.
- Lobsters are caught off the coast of Maine.
- The Cod and Halibut are caught in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bearing Sea.
Is It Worth the Money?
Now that we've explained what ButcherBox is, the plans, how it works, and about their meats, it's time to answer the big question – Is ButcherBox worth the money?
To answer that question, let's break down the numbers:
As an example, we'll use the standard size mixed box being shipped every 4-weeks.
- The cost of a standard mixed box = $137. This contains 8.5-11 lbs of meat, so we'll average it to 9.5 lbs.
- If you figure 24 meals (10-12 for 2 people / 5-6 for 4 people) per month and 6 oz of meat per meal, this plan equals $5.70 per meal.
- The cost is $14.42 per pound.
For high-quality meat, it's worth it in our opinion.
Here's the breakdown in cost per pound for each option:
Box Type | Standard Box Avg. Cost/lb. | Big Box Avg. Cost/lb. |
---|---|---|
Custom Box | $13.82 | $13.09 |
All Other Boxes | $14.42 | $13.32 |
The best option based on cost is the Big Custom Box at an average of $13.09/lb.
Is ButcherBox a Good Deal?
Everybody has their own opinion of what's a good deal and what's not. Therefore, we can only share our opinion based on our experience. And in our opinion, ButcherBox is a good deal. Here's why…
If you're fortunate enough to sign up with a promo like Free Bacon For Life, you'll receive one pack of their premium bacon with every order for the life of your membership!
Another thing to keep in mind is that all of the boxes include free shipping. As a result, the price for a box is the price you pay with it delivered to your door.
Meat Taste and Quality
One of the main reasons we love ButcherBox is their consistently high-quality meat. You'll notice the great taste and quality the first time you try one of their meats.
Note: if you're used to eating grain-fed beef, you'll notice that the 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef tastes a little different. That's because grass-fed beef tends to be leaner and has a more distinct beef flavor. This is totally normal and is how beef is actually supposed to taste!
